Rick Sigmon Dominates Late Model Stock Car Action at ASA Franklin County Speedway

The start of the Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Feature had the fans on there feet!

Rick Sigmon Takes the Checkered Flag and celebrates with a
victory lap.
Callaway, VA-- Coming into a double-points
race at ASA Franklin County Speedway on Saturday August 30th, Rick
Sigmon knew he had to let it all hang out in the Pro-Line Trailer
Sales 250. He did just that in the 75-lap Pro-Line Trailer Sales
Late Model Stock Car race.
Sigmon served notice to the field that he was all business by
leading both practice sessions before qualifying. He backed the
practice sessions up by winning the Family Pharmacy Pole Award with
a lap of 14.153 seconds during qualifying.
Sigmon would start fourth in the feature race after drawing a four
pill in the ASA mandated inversion. That would put rookie Travis
Hurt on the pole with eight time winner in 2008 Rodney Cook on the
outside. ASA National and track point leader Jimmy Mullins started
third.
Cook jumped to the lead at the start of the race with Hurt, Mullins
and Sigmon in tow. Hurt and Mullins made contact on lap 11 with the
number 21 machine of Hurt spinning in turn three. Hurt was then
slammed by the number 61 car of Frankie Kelley. Mullins was put to
the rear of the field for the contact and Hurt and Kelley were done
for the night.
Sigmon made quick work of Cook on the restart and dominated the rest
of the race. Mullins recovered from his penalty to finish second
with Cook finishing third. John Hall had his best run of the season
with a fourth place finish and Timmy Hogan came home fifth. Sigmon
trimmed Mullins' point lead to eighteen with one race weekend left
in the season.
Wayne Wilson returned to victory lane in Berglund Automotive Street
Stock action after a spirited battle with Tommy Adams, Jr. and Kyle
Dudley throughout the 30-lap race. Wilson was followed in the top
five by Adams, Jr., Brian Sutphin, Steven Weeks and Dudley.
Timmy Hogan took the PMZ Group Mod4 division win after a torrid
battle with Michael McGuire. McGuire pressured Hogan relentlessly
but could not make the pass for the lead. McGuire, Terry Mitchell,
Jonathan Smith and Jonathan Hall rounded out the top five finishers.
Chad Burnopp took the win in the Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR race.
Scott Foley came home second with Randy Argabright in third. Matthew
Cook and Josh Reeves completed the top five.
Racing switches to Sunday afternoon next week with the running of
the King's Hauling and Excavating, Specialized Saw & Mower/Underwood
Custom Kitchens, Inc. 250 on September 7th. Gates will open at 10AM
with practice beginning at 12:15PM. Qualifying rolls off at 2:30PM
and racing is slated to begin at 3:30PM.

Rodney Cook and Jimmy Mullins once again

Heights Tire, Lube and Deli 250 Saturday August 23rd.
Cook made his way to the front of the field from his third place
starting position in the first 35-lap feature and held off a strong
challenge from Rick Sigmon to take the checkered flag. Sigmon
finished second with Travis Hurt, Jimmy Mullins and Martinsville
Speedway President Clay Campbell next across the finish line. It was
the first appearance of the season for Campbell at the 3/8ths mile
bullring.
Mullins benefitted from the top four inversion in the second race
and led every lap of the race to take the win. Sigmon was strong
again and took a second place finish again. Cook, Campbell and Timmy
Hogan rounded out the top five in the nightcap.
Hogan held off a fierce challenge from Dennis Holdren to take the
30-lap PMZ Group Mod4 division feature. Holdren dogged Hogan the
last half of the race but could not make the pass. Michael McGuire,
Terry Mitchell and Jonathan Smith completed the top five finishers.
Scott Foley took the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR division
checkers. He was followed to the line by teammate Chad Burnopp,
Chris Amos, Randy Argabright and Charles Seagraves in the top five.
Tommy Adams, Jr. collected win number nine in the 30-lap Berglund
Automotive Street Stock division race. Brian Sutphin continued his
strong late season run with a runner up finish. Wayne Wilson, Kyle

Franklin County Part Of McReynolds History
The UARA pulled into the super tough bullring known as Franklin County Speedway Saturday night, and we all knew that the veterans would benefit from the tight confines....or so we thought. Alex Yontz dominated early but in the end it was a rookie, or make that two of them that put on the show. Seventeen year-old Brandon McReynolds now has a new title with his name, a UARA winner after winning the Unifirst 150 at Franklin County August 18, 2008. The day started off with a strong field of 24 cars, with Franklin County regular Rodney Cook making his second consecutive start with the UARA bunch. Early indications from practice were that the cars of Alex Yontz, Darrell Wallace Jr., Brandon McReynolds and Clay Greenfield would be the ones to beat. Yontz backed it up in qualifying taking the Sunoco Pole at a time of 13.646, almost 2 tenths faster than last years pole time. The two rookies didn't disappoint as Wallace took the KLB Race Cars outside pole, followed by McReynolds in 3rd. The top ten was rounded out by Jamey Caudill, Richard Boswell II, rookie Garrett Campbell in 6th, Corey LaJoie, point leader Jake Crum, Kyle Grissom and Roger Lee Newton rounding out the top 10. When the green waved, the field took off like a rocket but only for half a lap. Entering turn 3, the cars of B.J. Mackey, Rodney Cook, Thomas Hartensveld, Paddy Rodenbeck, Andrew Carlsen, Scott Andrews Jr. and Kyle Moon all pile up in the corner. Most cars would continue with minimal damage, with the exception of Rodenbeck and Moon. Their night would be done at this point. Usually on such a small tight track, cautions are frequent. But not on this night, as the field put on some of the best racing of the year. Early on it was evident that Yontz would be the one to beat, Wallace could get to him on restarts, but after 5 laps the #55 of Yontz could get some breathing room. Wallace had his own problems, in the form of McReynolds, as Brandon was more or less pestering him the entire event. Behind them Jake Crum and LaJoie were having their own battle, while the car of Jamie Yelton was going in another direction, backwards. Yelton pits on an early caution, and the results of the adjustments were phenomenal, he would be a player later on. As Yontz was cruising, point contender B.J. Mackey was having his own problems in the pack. Garrett Campbell and the lapped car of Scott Turlington got together down the frontstretch, spinning Campbell and knocking him from competition. In the melee Mackey gets left front fender damage and pits for repairs. On the restart Mackey gets into the side of Cook spinning him in turn 2. Cook would let B.J. know how he felt under caution, but it was fruitless as the #14 of Cook would park at lap 74, and Mackey would be involved in a later incident putting the #2 of Mackey 18th in the running order. This will make his championship quest much more challenging. We get to lap 102 and Yontz is still cruising, Wallace is completely sideways every lap with shots from McReynolds, and McReynolds finally muscles past on lap 88. Caudill is just sitting there lurking in 4th, watching the rookies go at it. Yontz has had his way with the field all night, but as in two previous races this year, bad luck raises it's head on the #55. Yontz slows at the start finish line and almost comes to a stop in turn 1, another blown right front tire while leading. McReynolds inherits the lead with 50 to go, Wallace is now on offense, and this should be good. Would the rookies survive? Entering the final stages of the event McReynolds shows why he was beating on Wallace's back bumper, he was much faster. Wallace gets pulled by 10 car lengths, and now has Caudill and Boswell all over him. On lap 119, Caudill smoothly passes Wallace for 2nd, only to have his car cut off 6 laps later letting Wallace and Boswell get by before the problem is corrected. Behind them Yelton who made the wholesale changes early, is coming like a bullet and moves into the top 7 with 25 to go. Alex Yontz, who changed the tire and stayed on the lead lap, moves himself back into the top 10 also. With 15 to go things got a little hairy. Curtis Truex Jr. and Clay Greenfield get together off turn two battlling for 7th place, nearly grinding the two cars to a complete stop. The field behind them bunches up, and as they sort themselves into turn 3, Mackey and Truex get together making the field behind them come to a halt. As the red comes out, Mackey and Truex are done, Mackey is upset about points and Truex is just upset period. Truex will head home as the ARP Hard Luck driver for this event. Ten laps to go McReynolds takes the green and pulls away from Wallace. With 4 to go Yontz, Kyle Grissom and LaJoie make contact, go 3 wide, and Yontz goes from 9th to 6th. At the line it's McReynolds taking his first win with the 14 year-old Wallace 10 cars back fending off Boswell. A great night of racing. Anytime you go to a track like this, you look for rookies to make mistakes and cause damage. But this night, the rookies showed the vets how it's done. And just think, Brandon McReynolds raced his first ever Late-Model race ever at the UARA season opener back in March. Eleven races later he is a winner in the most competitive Late-Model series in the country. He has now served notice he is one to be reckoned with. McReynolds will come home not only with the RE Suspension win but also as the Melling Select Rookie of the Race. Timmy Petty will be the Comp Cams Engine Builder of the Race. Dillon Smith of Waco, TX brings home the Holley Performer of the Race award. Smith has shown great improvement in the last few events and came from a 23rd place starting spot to his best UARA finish of tenth.
Michael Goard from Basset, VA was the lucky fan to win the Jeff Gordon driving experience.
Goard said “This is the first race I have attended at FCS this year. I came out to see the UARA cars race and I had a blast. This is awesome. Thanks UARA, I’, hoping I can cash this in at Daytona because I really want to go fast.” The UARA will give one more lucky fan a driving experience at the Bad Boy Mowers everythingattachment.com 150 at Tri County Speedway August 239, 2008. Mullins and Cook Visit Victory Lane Once Again at ASA Franklin County Speedway

Callaway, VA-- Jimmy Mullins and Rodney
Cook continued to have very successful 2008 seasons at ASA Franklin
County Speedway on August 9th. Both drivers took a checkered flag in
35-lap races in the Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Cars
portion of the Sleep Safe Beds 250.
Cook started from the pole after the ASA mandated inversion of the
top four cars after qualifying. The inversion relegated 14-year-old
Darrell Wallace, Jr. to the fourth starting position after he won
the Family Pharmacy Pole Award in qualifying with a 14.093 second
lap.
Cook, from Reidsville, NC, was coming off of a 75-lap win at Ace
Speedway in Altamahaw, NC the night before. He led from flag to flag
in the first race but was hounded from the midway point on by
Mullins. Mullins tried all the tricks in his bag but could not
muscle his way past Cook. Mullins took second place and young
Wallace, Jr. placed third. Rick Sigmon and Buster Carroll rounded
out the top five.
Wallace, Jr. jumped into the lead from his outside pole starting
position in the second race. Mullins closed in on Wallace, Jr. and
challenged him for several laps before contact between the two sent
the number 76 machine of Wallace, Jr. spinning in turn one. Track
officials ruled the contact a racing incident and that put Mullins
in a lead he would not relinquish. Cook challenged Mullins hard on a
late restart, but Mullins slowly pulled away for the win. Cook wound
up second with West Virginia's Derek Kiser taking third. Sigmon and
Jerry Scott finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Brian Sutphin took his first Berglund Automotive Street Stock
victory of the season by passing points leader Tommy Adams, Jr. late
in the 30-lap feature. Adams, Jr., Kyle Dudley, Wayne Wilson and
Eddie Rocke rounded out the top five.
Patrick Janney took his first win of the season in the Alan Mullins
Automotive UCAR 30-lapper. Janney dominated the race and was
followed to the line by Chad Burnopp, point leader Charles
Seagraves, Chris Amos and Randy Argabright in the top five.
Timmy Hogan broke 12-year-old Michael McGuire's four race win streak
in the PMZ Group Mod4 feature. Hogan crossed the finish line in
front of McGuire, Terry Mitchell, Jonathan Hall and point leader
Jonathan Smith.
Donald McIntosh made the most of his trip from Atlanta, GA to score
the win in the Sleep Safe Beds Super Mini Cup race. McIntosh battled
eventual second place finisher Tyler Baird side-by-side for a good
portion of the 30-lap affair. Baird, Casey Willingham, Sammy
Brookes and Brad Kennett were second through fifth.
The biggest Late Model Stock Car race of the season will be held
Saturday August 16th as the UARA-Stars touring series invades ASA
Franklin County Speedway for a 150-lap race. Close to thirty cars
are expected to try to qualify for the event. UCAR and Any Car races
are also on the schedule that night.

Carroll and Cook Capture Wins at ASA Franklin County Speedway

Rodney Cook takes the checkered flag for the fifth time this season at ASA Franklin County Speedway August 2nd.

Jimmy Mullins(57), Rodney Cook(14) and Rick Sigmon in close
formation at ASA Franklin County Speedway on August 2nd.
Callaway, VA-- Twin 35-lap Pro-Line Trailer
Sales Late Model Stock Car races brought two drivers back to victory
lane at ASA Franklin County Speedway. One had not been there in a
few months and one is getting used to taking the checkered flag at
the fast 3/8ths mile paved oval.
Buster Carroll returned to victory lane since early in the 2008
season in the first race. Nathan Wheat captured the Family Pharmacy
Pole Award in qualifying but had to start the feature in fourth
position after an inversion of the top four qualifiers. The
inversion put Carroll on the outside of Frankie Kelley. Carroll
jumped to the lead and held off all of the challengers. Rick Sigmon
finished second with Jimmy Mullins, Travis Hurt and Mike Dudley
following Carroll across the line in second through fifth.
Rodney Cook returned to his winning ways in the second race after a
sixth place finish in the first feature. A flat tire relegated the
Reidsville, NC driver to that finish in the first race. Cook charged
from his sixth place starting position to drive past Mullins in the
second race. Cook would not be denied his fifth win of the season.
Mullins, Hurt, Carroll and Sigmon rounded out the top five in the
second feature.
Michael McGuire took his fourth straight win in the PMZ Group Mod4
division race. McGuire battled mid race with eventual second place
finisher Joseph Overstreet but pulled away late for the win. Jamey
Hartman finished third with Jonathan Hall and Jeff Routt rounding
out the top five.
Tommy Adams, Jr. continued his hot streak in Berglund Automotive
Street Stock action by winning the 30-lap feature. Brian Sutphin
took his best finish of the season with second. Wayne Wilson, Steven
Weeks and Kyle Dudley were third through fifth respectively.
Randy Argabright won the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR
division race, He was followed to the line by Charles Seagraves,
Josh Reeves, Jerry Ramey and Chris Amos.
Jay Foley won the Southern Vintage Modified race and Frankie Kelley
won the Sportsman feature.
Racing returns to ASA Franklin County Speedway August 9th with the

MULLINS & SIGMON GO HEAD-TO-HEAD FOR MORE THAN
JUST A TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
By: Kevin Ramsell
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Friday, August 1, 2008) - The eyes of the
American Speed
Association will be watching the action this Saturday night at
Franklin Co.
Speedway in Callaway, VA as Jimmy Mullins and Rick Sigmon will be
battling
for the points lead in the late model division at the 3/8-mile
facility.
Only ten points separate the two in the track standings, but there
is more
on the line than just a track championship.
Both Mullins and Sigmon are also the top two drivers in the Joe
Gibbs Driven
Racing Oil American Speed Association Member Track National
Championship
standings.
The ten point separation has a lot of meaning when it comes down to
the
National Championship. Right now, Sigmon and Mullins are way above
the rest
when it comes to their average points in the national standings.
They are
the only two to have a performance indicator above 4.000. Sigmon
has a
4.0616 while Mullins has a 4.0556.
But its Mullins with that ten point lead at Franklin Co. Speedway
that
currently has him line for the National Championship that brings
along the
tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing. Sigmon needs to surpass Mullins in
the
Franklin Co. point standings in order to be line for the
championship, as
the requirement to be the National Champion is that you also must be
the
track champion.
The two are returning to the track this Saturday night after a well
deserved
weekend off. The last time the two met, Mullins took home a feature
win to
keep the lead at Franklin and stay on top of the national
standings.
In fact, 8 of the top ten in the East Region are weekly competitors
at
Franklin Co. Speedway.
Over in the West Region, Gary Madsen continues to lead with Cary
Stapp right
behind him. Madsen has a performance indicator of 3.5795 while
Stapp has a
3.5194.
Madsen won the 50-lap feature this past Saturday night at Rocky
Mountain
Raceway. He currently holds a 109-point lead over Michael Hale in
the
track's point standings. Hale currently sits third in the West
Region
standings with a 3.5166.
Rocky Mountain Raceway currently has four drivers in the West
Region's
top-ten.
Stapp finished second to Keith Garrett this past Saturday night at
Kyle, TX
Thunderhill Raceway. He currently has a 180-point lead over Duane
Toyne in
the track standings.
Both Rocky Mountain Raceway and Thunderhill don't have events
scheduled for
this weekend.
There is two full months left and it's possible that your favorite
driver at
your local ASA Member Track is just getting ready to make their mark
in the
season long National Championship chase. Make your plans to be at
one of
the 33 tracks this weekend and cheer them on.

12-Year-Old Phenom Continues Hot Streak at ASA Franklin County Speedway

Michael McGuire (22) on the inside of Timmy Hogan to begin the PMZ Group Mod4 race at ASA Franklin County Speedway on July 26th.

Michael McGuire in victory lane at ASA Franklin County Speedway.
Callaway, VA-- Michael McGuire got a late
start to his season at ASA Franklin County Speedway in 2008. At the
young age of twelve, you can hardly tell it as he drove to his third
win in a row in the PMZ Group Mod4 portion of the Underwood Custom
Kitchens, Inc. 250 on Saturday July 26th.
McGuire capitalized on leader Timmy Hogan's misfortune and cruised
the rest of the way in the thirty lap race. Hogan was caught up in a
wreck in turn four with Thomas Parmelee and Jeff Routt that ended
his evening.
Joseph Overstreet continued his string of fine runs after early
season woes with a second place finish. Terry Mitchell took third
with Jonathan Smith and Jonathan Hall fourth and fifth respectively.
Tommy Adams, Jr. won another Berglund Automotive Street Stock race.
Adams, Jr. extended his slim points lead with the win. Wayne Wilson,
Brian Sutphin, Teddy Lawless and Steven Weeks completed the top five
finishers in the 30-lap affair.
Randy Argabright took the win in the Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR
division. Argabright charged from the rear of the field to take his
second win of the season. Scott Foley, Patrick Janney, Charles
Seagraves and Josh Reeves rounded out the top five.
Tyler Baird took the 30-lap feature in the Sleep Safe Beds Super
Mini Cup division. Stephen Hershey, Sammy Brookes, Brad Kennett and
Jason Styron were next across the line at the checkered flag.
Danny Bagwell swept both 40-lap features for the touring ISCARS Dash
Series.

Bagwell On a Roll Claiming Two More Victories

CALLAWAY, VA (July 28, 2008) – International Sport Compact Auto
Racing
Series (ISCARS) DASH Touring, Sanctioned By American Speed
Association (ASA)
returned to Franklin County Speedway for the first time since 1986,
a race won by
Hut Stricklin. Twenty-two years later it was Danny Bagwell showing
the way
to victory lane not once but twice as ISCARS DASH Touring made a
pre-race
decision to run two 40 lap events in place of the planned 150 lap
format.
“Richard Gluth is doing a tremendous job with this track,” states
ISCARS
President Randy Claypoole. “This was my first time seeing the
track, and I was
really impressed with the determination Richard shows in building
upon the
great history of this facility.”
ISCARS is giving even greater consideration to offering the
competitors and
the fans two races instead of one. “Flexibility is a key component
and we
certainly want to put on the best show possible with what we have
to work with
at each event,” says Claypoole.
Danny Bagwell, 2007 ISCARS DASH Touring Champion, earned the top
spot during
qualifying. Gary Young, Jr made his own statement by beating Justin
Hobgood,
for the outside pole. At the start of the event the top three
quickly got
down to the business of jockeying for the lead. Young worked his
way passed
Bagwell exiting turn two and netted six laps up front before
Bagwell retook the
lead. Hobgood was able to get by Young relegating him to third.
With just four laps to go, Young had a tire going down and to
settle for a
6th place finish. Danny Bagwell took the win, Hobgood was second.
Chelsea
Schillig scored her second 3rd place finish in a row. Brad Queen
and Joey Jones
rounded out the top five.
Race winner Bagwell drew a number four inverting the top four
finishers to
determine the starting grid for the second 40 lap race. Brad Queen
gained the
top spot by virtue of the invert and quickly showed he was quite
comfortable
leading. After three laps in the top spot, he was quickly
disappointed when
his car experienced mechanical issues, forcing him to retire the
car from the
race. Bagwell assumed the lead and with great determination held
off a
relentless Hobgood.
Hobgood dogged him lap after lap, touching Bagwell’s bumper several
times
and even got a nose under him coming off turn four. “I really
wanted to get
passed him and thought I had a chance until the right front started
to give up
on me,” said Hobgood after the race.
With the two wins, Bagwell claimed the 15th and 16th wins of his
career
tying him with 1995 Champion David Hutto and passing 1994 Champion
Will Hobgood
(15). Rounding out the top five were Justin Hobgood, Gary Young, Jr,
Chelsea
Schillig and Joey Jones.
More thoughts on the event: “The economy and fuel prices continue
to impact
the race industry and the effect is certainly being felt at our
events this
year,” states ISCARS President Randy Claypoole. “The majority of
our race
teams are carefully gauging travel time and towing distance when it
comes to
considering their bottom line expenses. Those who own their own
businesses seem
to have more resources to justify the added expense. Others have to
take a
closer look at all the factors, distance, hotel rooms, purchase of
race day
tires, versus winnings at the end of the day.”
ISCARS DASH Touring promotes itself as a unique series, being the
only sport
compact stock car touring series in America. Unlike Late Model or
Modified
touring series who have a large pool of similar cars to pull from,
ISCARS
DASH Touring leans on a limited contingency of car owners that have
race ready
ISCARS DASH Touring cars available. “We have enough teams with cars
ready to
race,” adds Claypoole, “We just need to see a decrease in travel
expenses and
an increase in sponsorships to help with the overall expenses.”
With recent engine rules going into effect, ISCARS is still looking
at ways
to reduce the cost for a team to participate and yet remains one of
the least
expensive touring series in which to participate. Since the late
90’s teams
have been limited to using a V6 power plant that costs $35,000.
This year
ISCARS has allowed teams to consider the small block crate V8 as an
option. An
engine that ranges from $5000 to $7000 depending on which
manufacturer the
team prefers. “We have been talking to manufacturers in recent
weeks as they, as
in the 70’s, refocus their attention to smaller cars with better
fuel
economy,” says Claypoole. “There is some interesting news
developing around more
powerful 4 cylinders in the offing. And, we’ll certainly give every
consideration to where the industry is heading. For the first time
since we started
ISCARS, manufacturers are actually interested in having dialogue.
We certainly
want to
see where this can go.”
Next Race: New Senoia Raceway, Senoia, Georgia on Saturday,
August 9th.

FRANKLIN COUNTY SPEEDWAY SHOWS IT'S HAND FOR
THE JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL
ASA MEMBER TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
By: Kevin Ramsell
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Thursday, July 24, 2008) - Jimmy Mullins took
another
feature win this past Saturday night at Virginia's Franklin County
Speedway
allowing him to keep a 10-point lead over Rick Sigmon in the track's
point
standings and it allows him to continue as the overall leader for
the Joe
Gibbs Driven Racing Oil American Speed Association Member Track
Championship. The 10-point lead over Rick Sigmon is vital as he
needs to
stay on top of his track standings in order to have a shot at a Joe
Gibbs
Racing tryout at the end of the season.
Mullins and Rodney Cook each took home a feature win this past
Saturday
night as Franklin County Speedway hosted a twin 35 lap feature
events. The
win allowed Mullins to stay ahead of Sigmon in the points while
Sigmon
continues to hold a higher performance indicator for the National
Championship. But, Sigmon needs to get around Mullins in order to
have his
shot at becoming the inaugural National Champion, with the rules
stating you
must be your home track champion in order to be the National
Champion.
Sigmon isn't the only driver that Mullins needs to worry about at
Franklin
County as its top eight drivers in the point standings also take up
eight of
the top ten spots in the East Division National Championship
standings. At
Franklin County, the top eight are only separated by 178 points.
Of those eight drivers, it's Sigmon who has the highest performance
indicator of 4.0616 with Mullins having a 4.0556. Now Sigmon just
needs to
get ahead of Mullins in the points.
KD Kelley hopes to get back behind the wheel this weekend at East
Bay
Raceway Park in Tampa, Fl and make his attempt to take over the top
spot
from any of the Franklin County Speedway drivers. Kelley has a
performance
indicator of 3.1506.
Friendship Motor Speedway, located in Elkin, NC is represented by
its point
leader Keith Holder as he has the third highest indicator of
2.7332.
Looking at the West Region, Gary Madsen's 40-point lead over Michael
Hale at
Rocky Mountain Raceway is keeping him in the hunt for the National
Championship.
Like the East Region, Hale will need to climb past Madsen in the
points in
order to sit on top of the West Region has he has a performance
indicator of
3.4306 compared to Madsen's 3.1644. While Bryan Wordelman needs to
make up
230 points at Rocky Mountain to have his shot as he has a
performance
indicator of 3.2280.
When looking at the West Region Standings alone, Rocky Mountain
Raceway has
the top three spots with Hale, Wordelman, and Madsen.
Dale Roth's win at Douglas County Speedway this past Sunday gives
him a
23-point lead over Wade Koens which has him sitting second in the
West
Region with 3.1485 while Thunderhill Raceway's Cary Stapp is third
with
3.1108.
"You couldn't ask for a better script heading down the stretch to
crowning
our first ever champion," Dennis Huth, American Speed Association
President
stated. "What makes this intriguing is that the drivers are
basically
racing two races in one. First, they need to win their home track
championship. Once, they do that, and then they need have a great
performance indicator in order to get that chance at a test session
with Joe
Gibbs Racing. It's very possible that the driver with the highest
performance indicator will not be our first champion because they
need be on
top at their track, and this will make the racing at any American
Speed
Association Member Track exciting from now until the end of the
season."

Callaway, VA-- Jimmy Mullins and Rodney
Cook are turning ASA Franklin County Speedway into their own little
playground. Both drivers proved their mettle during twin 35-lap
Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Car races for the Jack's
Mountain Quarry 250 Saturday July 19th.
Cook took the Family Pharmacy Pole Award in qualifying with a 14.061
second lap. The top four cars were inverted after qualifying and
that put rookie points leader Travis Hurt on the inside pole. Rick
Sigmon, ASA Joe Gibbs Driven National points leader Jimmy Mullins
and Cook lead the seventeen car field to the green flag.
It sounds like a broken record in 2008 but the racing during the
first 35-lap race had fans on their feet from start to finish. Cook
prevailed after a hard fought battle from his fourth place starting
position. Sigmon followed Cook to the finish line and was followed
by Hurt, Mullins and newcomer Jerry Scott to complete the top five.
Mullins turned the tables in the second race by leading from flag to
flag. His job was far from easy as Cook put all kinds of pressure on
Mullins. Cook rubbed, nudged and did everything he could but could
not get by the crafty veteran. Cook settled for second with Hurt,
Sigmon and Mike Dudley rounding out the top five finishers.
Twelve year old sensation Michael McGuire took his second PMZ Group
Mod4 division win in a row. McGuire passed leader Tim Hogan with
five laps to go to take the checkered flag in the 30-lap feature.
B.J. Hodges, point leader Jonathan Smith and Douglas Morgan were
next to cross the finish line.
Tommy Adams, Jr. took another checkered flag in Berglund Automotive
Street Stock action. Adams, Jr. finished the thirty lap distance
ahead of Kendall Ramsey, Teddy Lawless, Brian Sutphin and Ernie
Gillespie.
Jerry Ramey took the win in the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR
division feature. Randy Argabright was second with Bill Lipes, Eddie
Scott and Charles Seagraves close in tow for third through fifth.
Sammy Brookes took the Sleep Safe Beds Super Mini Cup feature over
Donald McIntosh, Damien Inge, Derek Law and Jason Styron.
The Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Cars have the week off
on July 26th as the ISCARS Touring Series comes to ASA Franklin
County Speedway for a 150-lap race. Street Stock, Mod4, Super Mini
Cup and UCAR races are also on the schedule.

Cook Stays as Hot as the Summer Weather at ASA Franklin County
Speedway

Callaway, VA-- Rodney Cook of Reidsville,
NC continued his hot streak to begin the summer months by capturing
his third win in four starts in the Pro-Line Trailer Sales portion
of the Hometown Clinic 250 at ASA Franklin County Speedway on Friday
July 4th.
Cook started the 75-lap race in fifth position after the top six
cars were inverted after qualifying. Rick Sigmon of Rocky Mount, VA
took the $100 Family Pharmacy Pole Award in qualifying with a 14.110
second lap and started sixth.
Cook fought his way past the cars of Buster Carroll, Travis Hurt,
and track points leader Jimmy Mullins during the action packed race
to run second behind early race leader Nathan Wheat. Cook was
putting serious pressure on Wheat for the lead when the engine in
Wheat's car expired coming out of turn four. Cook held off
challenges from Mullins and Sigmon during a few restarts toward the
end of the race to take the checkered flag. Mullins, Sigmon, Hurt
and Carroll completed the top five.
Teddy Lawless took the win in the 30-lap Berglund Automotive Street
Stock race. Tommy Adams, Jr, Kyle Dudley, Wayne Wilson and newcomer
to the division Brian Sutphin rounded out the top five finishing
order.
Timmy Hogan won a very entertaining PMZ Group Mod4 race. Thirteen
cars took the green flag in the 30-lap affair. Hogan held off
challengers Joe Taylor and Michael McGuire in a very spirited
battled for the win. Contact between McGuire and Taylor on the white
flag lap sent both cars crashing across the finish line under the
checkered flag. Taylor was credited with second and 12-year-old
McGuire took third. Joseph Overstreet and A.J. Sanders were fourth
and fifth respectively.
Jerry Ramey took his second win of the season in Alan Mullins
Automotive UCAR racing. Ramey, Scott Foley, Adam Phillips and Randy
Argabright battled back and forth all race long to the delight of
the huge crowd on hand. Ramey, Foley, Phillips, Argabright and Bill
Lipes were the top five finishers in the eighteen car field.
Donald McIntosh took his second win in as many visits to ASA
Franklin County Speedway in 2008 during the Sleep Safe Beds Super
Mini Cup feature. McIntosh was followed to the line by Brad Kennett,
point leader Tyler Baird, Sammy Brookes and newcomer Steve Teter.
Double fun comes to ASA Franklin County Speedway July 11th and 12th.
Mountain Heart with Josh Schilling and The Locust Mountain Boys will
be in concert at the speedway Friday July 11th. July 12th brings the
fast and furious ASA Southern Modified Tour back to the speedway for
a 150-lap event. Brian King, Jay Foley, L. W. Miller, Jason Myers
and a host of others will be on hand to put on a show for the ages.

Callaway, VA--Jimmy Mullins and Rodney Cook
had fans on their feet for both 35-lap Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late
Model Stock Car races at ASA Franklin County Speedway on Saturday
June 28th.
Mullins and Cook waged epic battles in both races. Both started on
the second row in the first race and were one and two respectively
going into the second lap of the feature. Cook hounded Mullins
throughout the event but came up short. Cook crossed the line second
with Travis Hurt, Frankie Kelley and Rick Sigmon rounding out the
top five.
The two veteran Late Model Stock Car stars put on an even better
show in the second race. The rubbing and hard racing was as about as
exciting as fans will see on a short track. Cook eventually got by
Mullins late in the race. Contact between the two may have resulted
in Mullins suffering a flat left front tire and making hard contact
with the turn three wall. The wreck relegated Mullins to an eleventh
place finish.
Cook, from Reidsville, NC, went on to victory for the second time in
his last three starts at FCS. Sigmon finished second and crept to
within two points of Mullins in the points battle. Nathan Wheat,
Hurt and Buster Carroll were next in the top five in the second
race.
Timmy Hogan took another checkered flag in the PMZ Group Mod4
division. Hogan led all the way after getting a great start from his
outside pole starting position. Pole winner Michael McGuire finished
second in the 30-lap race. Jonathan Smith, Jonathan Hall and John
David Helm rounded out the top five.
Tommy Adams, Jr. took another win in the Berglund Automotive Street
Stock race. Teddy Lawless, Wayne Wilson, Tony Housman and Danny Bush
were the other top five finishers. Bush is ok after a hard wreck
ended his race with three laps to go when a flywheel exploded and
sent his black Chevelle hard into the turn three wall in a ball of
flames.
Randy Argabright took his first win of the season in the Alan
Mullins Automotive UCAR 30 lapper. Chris Amos, Eddie Scott, Bill
Lipes and Charles Seagraves were next to cross the finish line.
Sammy Brookes took his second win of the season in the Sleep Safe
Beds Super Mini Cup division. Brad Kennett finished second with
Damien Inge in third, Tyler Baird fourth and Jason Styron was fifth.
Racing action shifts to Friday night on July 4th with the running of
the Hometown Clinic 250. Double points will be up for grabs in all
regular divisions plus the third $1,000 to win Any Car race of the
season will be run after being rained out on June 21st. The area's
biggest and best fireworks display will commence after the racing
action is over and a flat screen TV will be given away to one lucky
fan in attendance.
Gates open at 3PM on Friday with practice getting underway at 4PM.
Qualifying will start at 6PM with racing action slated to begin at
7:20PM.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 10, 2008) –
With a Joe Gibbs Racing test session on the
line it is already becoming clear that the points battle for the
inaugural ASA Short Track National Championship will be a heated
battle throughout the hot summer months.
Click here to see the current ASA/Gibbs Driven Oil national points.
“We’ve started tabulating the points for the ASA Short Track
National Championship and the system we laid out has already proven
to be extremely competitive,” said Dennis Huth, president of Racing
Speed Associates which now owns the American Speed Association. He
pointed out that it was still early in the race season however, and
that he expects so see many “passes for the lead” before a champion
is named.
“We still have a few ASA Member Tracks that have not submitted all
their results yet so that will change the standings, of course. Once
all the racetracks have the minumum14 races completed then we should
really have a much clearer idea on who the top drivers are that will
be battling it out for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Champion
Award and the test session behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing
Toyota,” explained Huth.
Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, sponsor of the ASA National Short Track
National Championship, is the same oil developed and used by Joe
Gibbs Racing. The team sells the oil so racers across the country
can have access to the latest technology in racing lubricants.
The ASA Short Track National Championship will be decided by a
standardized point structure for competitors in the racetrack’s
feature division, along with a handicap to create equality between
the variety of track sizes and equipment standards to determine a
performance index. This index will be used to calculate competitor
points for each race and will be factored by the number of races run
to create an average (similar to a baseball batting average). Though
the index number is simply a measurement device and holds no real
relevance except to be compared to another performance index number,
in general the larger the number the better. So, for example, a
10.1234 indicates that driver has fared better at this point in the
season that a competitor with a performance index of 9.4321.
According to Doug Binstock, general manager at Rocky Mountain
Raceways in West Valley City, Utah, the ASA Short Track National
Championship has already generated considerable enthusiasm among his
competitors.
“This is a huge, huge opportunity for the racers. It has brought a
tremendous amount of excitement to our competitor base,” he said.
“As exciting as it would be to win the title, the test session with
Joe Gibbs Racing is the type of opportunity that no amount of money
could buy and that is the real pot of gold at the end of the
rainbow.”
“The great thing about this program is that it really helps the
racetracks like ours that are remotely located. Our guys don’t
travel much because it is a long haul to some other tracks so they
don’t get much visibility beyond Rocky Mountain Raceways and the
local media. But the ASA Short Track National Championship lets
tracks like ours showcase the skills of the drivers that we have
here and lets the world see the level of talent that is racing on
these ASA Member Tracks,” added Binstock.
The updated points will be posted at
www.ASA-Racing.com each Tuesday
night. This will show the leaders at each track in the two
divisions, and a link will open a page with the complete driver
standings. Results of competitions run up to midnight on Sept. 28
can be utilized for the calculations.
“I think that once the drivers really grasp the fact that someone at
their level will be able to win a test session with Joe Gibbs Racing
then the whole program will really explode in terms of enthusiasm. I
want to thank everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing for having the foresight
to see the value in supporting this program and making a dream come
true for the eventual winner,” said Huth.
Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the premier organizations in NASCAR,
currently fielding three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, two NASCAR
Nationwide Series teams and a driver development program. Its driver
lineup consists of Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch in the
Sprint Cup Series; Stewart, Hamlin, and Busch in the Nationwide

Callaway, VA-- Rodney Cook made his trip
from Reidsville, NC worth his while by leading flag-to-flag in the
75-lap Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Car portion of the
Professional Security/PSS Range and Training 250 Saturday June 7th
at ASA Franklin County Speedway.
Cook started on the outside of pole sitting Rocky Mount, VA driver
Rick Sigmon. Buster Carroll of Henry, VA was slated to start third
but broke an axle during the pace laps before the race. Kelly
Kingery of Wirtz, VA won the Family Pharmacy pole award in
qualifying and started fourth after the ASA mandated pill draw after
time trials were finished.
Sigmon could not hold off Cook on the start and the race was on to
see who could challenge him. Sigmon took his turn putting pressure
on Cook but had a rear end problem that would cause him to spin and
relegate him to a fifth place finish.
Current point leader and defending track champion Jimmy Mullins of
Basset, VA would assume the chase role next and put pressure on Cook
for several laps before leading Late Model rookie Travis Hurt of
Wirtz, VA started knocking on Mullins' rear bumper.
Hurt would pass Mullins for the runner up spot but the laps ran out
as he was chasing Cook for the win. Cook held on for his first win
of 2008 at the 3/8ths mile speed plant. Hurt took second with
Mullins, Nathan Wheat of Wirtz, VA and Sigmon rounding out the top
five. Pole winner Kingery was the first car out of the race with a
blown engine.

Cup division. Brookes held off Atlanta, GA driver Casey Willingham
for the win. Willingham, Brad Kennett, point leader Tyler Baird and

and win in the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR race. Ramey
prevailed by a few car lengths over Argabright. Chris Amos, Eddie

Sigmon Takes First Win of 2008 at ASA Franklin County Speedway

Callaway, VA-- Rick Sigmon had been
knocking on the door of Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Car
Victory Lane all season at ASA Franklin County Speedway. He kicked
that door in with a resounding victory on Saturday May 31st.
Sigmon won the Family Pharmacy pole award in qualifying only to have
it stripped after failing post qualifying inspection when his front
bumper was too low.
The disqualification put point leader Jimmy Mullins on the point and
he also received the $100 from Family Pharmacy for the pole. Mullins
pulled a five pill for the ASA mandated inversion of the starting
order.
Timmy Hogan jumped to the lead from his outside pole starting
position and stayed out front while Mullins, rookie Travis Hurt and
Sigmon, who had charged from the rear of the field, entertained the
fans with a fierce battle for second place.
Hurt muscled his way past Mullins with Sigmon in tow. Mullins
suffered a flat tire and lost a lap on the track. Hurt dispatched
Hogan for the lead after a caution and Sigmon came through with Hurt
for second position.
Sigmon passed Hurt on the inside in turns three and four near lap 45
and never looked back. Hurt finished second with Hogan, Dennis
Holdren and Eddie Young rounding out the top five.
Charles Seagraves overcame a mid-race pit stop to take the 30-lap
Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR feature. Seagraves was trailed to the
line by Andrew Williams, Wesley Thomason, Chad Seagraves and Josh
Reeves.
Tommy Adams, Jr. took another Berglund Automotive Street Stock
feature win. Adams held off a hard charging Kyle Dudley for the
checkered flag. Wayne Wilson, Danny Bush and Steven Weeks completed
the top five.
“Smokin” Joe Taylor took his first win of 2008 in the 30-lap PMZ
Group Mod4 feature. Taylor lead all the way from his pole starting
position. Third generation youngster Michael McGuire rebounded from
a crash last week to take home second place honors. Dennis Holdren,
Jonathan Smith and Denny Sloan rounded out the top five.
Richard Brown of New Castle, VA took the $1,000 Any Car win.
Racing returns to ASA Franklin County Speedway Saturday June 7th
with the running of the Professional Security/ PSS Range and

Teenage Sensation Takes First Late Model Stock Car Win at ASA
Franklin County Speedway
Callaway, VA-- Most folks who follow the
regional racing scene knew it was just a matter of time before
14-year old Darrell Wallace, Jr. of Concord, NC took a trip to
victory lane. Wallace, Jr. made it happen for the first time at ASA
Franklin County Speedway on Saturday May 24th.
The youngster overcame an eighth place start to muscle his way past
current track champion and point leader Jimmy Mullins near the
50-lap mark and never looked back in the 75-lap Pro-Line Trailer
Sales Late Model Stock Car feature.
Mullins, who won the Family Pharmacy Pole Award in qualifying, drew
a six for the ASA mandated inversion. Calvin Brooks jumped to the
lead from his outside pole starting position early in the race.
The lead Brooks enjoyed eroded after Mullins and Nathan Wheat made
contact to bring out the first caution. The field behind the spin
scattered with many cars suffering damage. Wheat's night was all but
finished after the contact caused electrical problems with his
mount.
Contact between Brooks and Wallace, Jr. brought out the second
caution and the aftermath left rookie points leader Travis Hurt
sidelined for the rest of the event.
Wallace inherited the lead and on the next restart, Mullins got by
Wallace, Jr. on the outside. Wallace, Jr. kept the pressure on
Mullins and took the lead with a pass in turns three and four and
went on for the win. Mullins finished second with Rick Sigmon, Timmy
Hogan and Mike Dudley rounding out the top five.
Tommy Adams, Jr. returned to victory lane in the 30-lap Berglund
Automotive Street Stock division race. Adams, Jr. bounced back after
a technical infraction negated a win the week prior. He was followed
closely the entire way by rookie point leader Kyle Dudley. Dudley
crossed the finish line second with Wayne Wilson, Teddy Lawless and
Danny Bush in tow.
Point leader Jonathan Smith took his first asphalt win ever when
leaders Michael McGuire and Timmy Hogan crashed while battling for
the lead early in the PMZ Group Mod4 30-lap feature. Both cars were
done for the evening with the young third generation driver McGuire,
suffering the worst damage after slamming the inside wall on the
backstretch. The driver is fine but the crew will have a bunch of
work to do this week to fix the damage.
Richard Doss, in his first appearance at FCS this season, took
second with John David Helm, Douglas Morgan and Jeff Routt rounding
out the top five.
Scott Foley took his second win in a row in Alan Mullins Automotive
UCAR action. Foley started from the rear of the nineteen car field
and charged his way to the win. Jerry Ramey, Chris Amos, Bill Lipes
and Eddie Scott finished second through fifth.
Tyler Baird rallied from an early race altercation to take the
30-lap Sleep Safe Bed Super Mini Cup checkers. Rob Kuczmarski,
Damien Inge, Jason Styron and Draven Harrison completed the top
five.
Racing action continues Saturday May 31st at ASA Franklin County
Speedway with the running of the Cannaday's Hobby/Cannaday's Sav-a-Bit
250. Late Model Stock Car, Street Stock, Mod4, UCAR and a
$1,000-to-win Any Car race highlight the on track activities.

Todd Peck for the victory. Johnson and Peck were followed in top
five of the thirteen car field by Larry Wilcox, Ryan Miller and

Stock race after apparent winner Tommy Adams, Jr. failed post race
inspection with a flywheel infraction. Following Weeks to the finish
line in the top five were Teddy Lawless, Frankie Kelley, Kyle Dudley
and Wayne Wilson.
Timmy Hogan fended off a strong race long challenge from Joe Taylor
to take the win in the PMZ Group Mod4 division race. Taylor dogged
Hogan and tried everything he could to get by but fell short in his
bid for the win. Hogan and Taylor were followed to the line by third
generation driver Michael McGuire, Denny Sloan and current point
leader Jonathan “CrackerJack” Smith.
Scott Foley took his second win of the season in Alan Mullins

2008. Four races into the 2008 campaign shows Mullins is very
focused on defending his 2007 track championship. He took his third
win in four tries Saturday May 10th.
Rick Sigmon scored his first Family Pharmacy Pole Award in Pro-Line
Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Car qualifying. Sigmon started the
feature fifth after the ASA mandated redraw. The redraw put Mullins
on the pole for the 75-lap feature.
Mullins lead every lap in his Packaging Products, Inc., Mullins
Custom Exhaust, Subway, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, Young Engines
Dodge Charger. Mullins had strong challenges from last weeks winner
Buster Carroll and Kelly Kingery. Kingery was making his first start
of the season at the 3/8ths mile speed plant.
Kingery, from Wirtz, VA, made several charges at Mullins the last
fifteen laps but could not muscle his way past the Bassett, VA
bullitt. Kingery finished second with Sigmon, Nathan Wheat and Mike
Dudley rounding out the top five.
Wayne Wilson took the lead from Tommy Adams, Jr. late in the 30-lap
Berglund Automotive Street Stock race and held on for the win.
Adams, Jr. and Wilson have both won two races apiece early in the
2008 season. Kyle Dudley, Teddy Lawless and Steven Weeks followed
Wilson and Adams, Jr. to the line.
Timmy Hogan hopped in the car usually driven by his son Dakota and
took the 30-lap PMZ Group Mod4 feature win. Hogan dominated from the
pole position. He was followed to the line by Paul Caldwell, points
leader Jonathan Smith, Jamey Hartman in his first race of the season
and Jeff Routt.
Bill Lipes took a win in the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR
race. Lipes was trailed to the line by Mike Scott, Shannon Pugh,
Josh Reeves and Andrew Williams in the top five. Original third
place finisher Kirby Shipman did not pass post race tech inspection.
Jerry Scott and Corey Agee were winners in the Southern Vintage
Modified and Sportsman races and Kenneth Tuttle took the win in the
East Coast Flathead Ford Association race.
The Super Pro Cup Series will invade Franklin County Speedway for
the first of two appearances next Saturday May 17th. The Super Pro
Cup cars will race for 100-laps. Street Stock, Mod4, UCAR and VA
Mini Cups are also on the schedule.
Mullins and Cook Put on a Show at ASA Franklin County Speedway

(Rodney Cook, Jimmy Mullins and Rick Sigmon race in close quarters at ASA Franklin County Speedway on April 12th.)

(Jimmy Mullins stands in victory lane at ASA Franklin
County Speedway on April 12th.)
If the first two weeks of competition are
any indication, it could be a season for the ages at ASA Franklin
County Speedway.
Jimmy Mullins won his second consecutive Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late
Model Stock Car race in as many tries Saturday April 12th, but it
was much more difficult than the first race of the 2008 campaign.
Mullins took the Family Pharmacy Pole Award in qualifying with a
14.001 second lap. He was followed in qualifying by Rodney Cook,
Travis Hurt, Nathan Wheat and Mike Dudley.
Dudley raced to the lead when the green flag was dropped. Dudley led
a handful of laps before Nathan Wheat assumed the lead. Battles in
the top five were fast and furious because of an inversion of the
top five qualifiers as per ASA rules.
Cook took his turn at the front of the field when Wheat had a right
rear tire go flat during a restart at lap 31. Cook held the lead for
a few laps before Mullins muscled his way past.
Mullins lead was never comfortable for the rest of the 75-lap
distance. Cook challenged Mullins several times, pulling alongside
the Basset, VA driver a few times and making slight contact with the
reigning track champion.
Cook dogged Mullins to the checkered flag but could not unseat
Mullins for the win. Cook finished right on Mullins back bumper with
a fast closing Rick Sigmon taking third. Late Model Stock Car rookie
Travis Hurt finished fourth with Nathan Wheat rounding out the top
five.
Tommy Adams, Jr. took the win in the always crowd pleasing Berglund
Automotive Street Stock 30-lap feature.
Adams, Jr. took the lead from last weeks winner Wayne Wilson late in
the race and held on for the win. Wilson crossed the line second
with hard charging Teddy Lawless finishing third. David Harman, Jr
and newcomer David Liles completed the top five.
Dakota Hogan continued his domination of the PMZ Group Mod4 division
with his second win in a row. Hogan led every lap in the event.
Jonathan “CrackerJack” Smith, the 15-year-old phenom, took his
second consecutive runner-up finish. Jeff Routt came home third with
Terry Mitchell and Timothy Barnes next to cross the line.
Bill Lipes triumphed in the 30-lap Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR
race. Lipes held off a determined Shannon Pugh for the win. 2007
UCAR Rookie of the Year Wesley Thomason collected his first podium
finish of 2008 with a third place run. Josh Reeves and Scott Foley
rounded out the top five.
Brad Kennett took a hard fought win in the Sleep Safe Bed Super Mini
Cup 30-lap race. Kennett battled Tyler Baird side by side for 10
laps before taking command. 2007 Super Mini Cup track champion Rob
Kuczmarski finished second and was followed by Baird, Sammy Brookes
and Draven Harrison in the top five.
Racing returns to ASA Franklin County Speedway on Saturday April
19th with another great afternoon of racing. The Pro-Challenge
Series will make their first appearance of 2008 at the track with
all of the other regular divisions. Gates open at 11am with practice
slated to begin at Noon. Qualifying starts at 2pm with racing
scheduled to get the green flag at 3:15pm.
Mother Nature Cooperates with Franklin County Speedway for Season Opener
Callaway, VA—The beginning of the ASA
sanctioned era at Franklin County Speedway was helped by Mother
Nature on Saturday afternoon April 5th. With tracks all over the
region having to cancel their races because of a slow moving cold
front, FCS defied the odds and got all five of their races of the
Longwood Signworks 250 in on a cloudy, gray day.
Jimmy Mullins served notice in qualifying that he was serious in his
pursuit of a second straight Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock
Car title by winning the pole with a 13.870 second lap. The Bassett
driver took the Family Pharmacy $100 pole award in the process.
Nathan Wheat led the seventeen car field to the green flag after
Mullins drew a number four pill for an inversion. Mullins wasted no
time getting to the front as he pulled off a daring pass of outside
pole sitter Rick Sigmon after Wheat spun his tires on the initial
start. Mullins also led lap eleven which paid $400 to the leader of
that lap, sponsored by Arrington Land Development.
Mullins was challenged early by Wheat but was on a rail as he led
every lap of the 75-lap feature. Wheat, Rodney Cook and Sigmon diced
for the second position during the last fifteen laps with Wheat
following Mullins across the finish line in second. Cook, Sigmon
and Calvin Brooks rounded out the top five,
Arrington Sports Awards rookie of the race Kevin Smith finished
sixth with Kevin Parker, Frankie Kelley, Eddie Young and Chris
Carroll completing the top ten.
Charles Seagraves took the Alan Mullins Automotive UCAR win. He was
followed to the checkers by Bill Lipes, Shannon Pugh, Scott Foley
and Chris Amos.
Dakota Hogan, the 2007 Mod4 track champion picked up where he left
off by winning the 30-lap PMZ Group Mod4 feature. He passed 15-year
old runner up Jonathan Smith with five laps to go for the win.
Smith, Terry Mitchell, John David Helm and Douglas Morgan crossed
the line second through fifth,
The Berglund Automotive Street Stock race was won by Wayne Wilson.
Wilson passed Tommy Adams, Jr. late in the race and held on for the
win. Adams, Jr, Eddie Rocke, Earnest Gillespie and Kyle Dudley
rounded out the top five finishers.
Donald McIntosh traveled from Dawsonville, GA to take the 50-lap
Sleep Safe Beds Super Mini Cup race. Brian Arrington took second
place with Casey Willingham, Brad Kennett and Tyler Baird running
third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Racing returns to ASA Franklin County Speedway on Saturday afternoon
April 12 with the running of the Franklin Ready Mix 250. Gates open
at 11am with practice beginning at Noon. Qualifying will begin at
2pm with the green flag falling on all of the day's action at
3:15pm.
***Five Star Stock Car Bodies and ASA sanctioned Franklin County Speedway will award a Five Star Body Re-Skin Kit to the winner of the most pole positions in the Pro-Line Trailer Sales Late Model Stock Car division in 2008. ASA CREATES NEW "SHORT
TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP"; DRIVERS COAST TO COAST ELIGIBLE FOR
CASH PRIZE, JOE GIBBS RACING TEST
By: American Speed Association PR
For Immediate Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 26, 2008) The American Speed
Association (ASA) is breaking new ground once again, by unveiling
plans today for an innovative Short Track National Championship. The
new plan allows competitors in any ASA Member Tracks premier
division to compete against each other, regardless of geographical
location. The winner will receive a prize even bigger than the
bragging rights - the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Champion's Award
and a chance to test behind the wheel of a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil is the same oil developed and used by
Joe Gibbs Racing. Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil allows racers across
the country access to the latest technology in racing lubricants.
Its always a tremendous accomplishment for a driver to claim a
track championship, and we dont intend to overlook or diminish that
in any way, said Dennis Huth, president of Racing Speed Associates,
owner and operator of the American Speed Association. But with the
thousands of ASA members racing each weekend, they wanted a way to
find out how they measured up against other drivers at all the ASA
Member Tracks across the country without having to spend the money
and time involved in traveling from event to event.
The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to
activate a measuring system which takes into account many variables,
such as field size and number of races in a season, and create a
level playing field to determine who is the best-of-the-best of
the ASA Member Track champions.
Although the formula is naturally quite complex, the system creates
a standardized point structure for competitors in a tracks feature
division, along with a handicap to create equality between the
variety of track sizes and equipment standards to determine a
performance index. This index will be used to calculate competitor
points for each race and will be factored by the number of races run
to create an average (similar to a baseball batting average).
Racetracks which invert their field have all so been taken into
consideration mathematically. Competitors must be their track
champion at the conclusion of the season, race in a minimum of 14
events, and only races run at the drivers home track will be
credited toward the new ASA Short Track National Championship.
Credit goes to Kevin Spiddle at Speednet Direct who is the
mastermind behind the formula used by the American Speed Association
to calculate the ASA Short Track National Champion. He is setting up
the system to automatically calculate the events run on any given
weekend of the season, and post up-to-date standings which can be
viewed online at
www.ASA-Racing.com.
Results of competitions run up to midnight on Sept. 28 can be
utilized for the calculations.
ASA will create East and West divisions, with an ASA Short Track
Divisional Champion crowned in each. The one driver who accumulates
the most points will be named the ASA Short Track National Champion.
With the title comes a cash reward, and the ultimate dream a test
session with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Series; and Joey Logano and Marc Davis in the NASCAR Camping World
Series East. Based in Huntersville, N.C., and owned by Joe Gibbs a
three-time Super Bowl winner as head coach of the Washington
Redskins and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame JGR has
competed in NASCAR since 1992, winning three Cup Series
championships and more than 80 NASCAR races, including three
Brickyard 400s and the 1993 Daytona 500.
Dennis Huth and his staff at ASA have been proactive in seeking new
opportunities to assist their ASA Short Track National Championship
winning driver with a newly created award that will allow them a
test with Joe Gibbs Racing. We look forward to joining ASA as the
sponsor of the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil Champion's Award, said
J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Driven. This is an exciting
program as it will allow us to continue to reach out to qualified
driver candidates for our development program while gaining
additional exposure for our expanding line of Joe Gibbs Driven
lubricants and other products, which are fast becoming the number
one choice among racers.
What better incentive for a driver than not only winning a track
championship, but to become the ASA Short Track National Champion
with a chance to show your driving skills to those involved in the
highest levels of the Cup Series at Joe Gibbs Racing. The ASA has a
long history of developing championship drivers and having them move
on through the ranks to the pinnacles of professional racing. This
could be a way for one talented driver to shorten the curve and
impress those who can make things happen, Huth said.
One of my goals since becoming involved in the American Speed
Association is to help bring the often-overlooked weekly racing
programs a greater level of recognition at a nationwide level, and
the ASA Short Track National Championship is a big step in the right
direction, Huth said. Weekly racing is so critical in developing
the star drivers of the future and is still a vital part of the
motorsports landscape, but it seems to have gotten a little stagnant
lately. Through the American Speed Association we are continually
striving to bring new life to the racetracks and regional touring
series in a variety of ways that will assist the competitors,
tracks, and promoters and, hopefully, people are starting to take
notice of what we are doing.
The ASA Short Track National Championship is another step by the
industry leader in creating new and innovative programs. The new ASA
National Championship follows closely ASA'S recent move to extend
additional insurance coverage for ASA Racing members traveling to,
from, and during an ASA-sanctioned event.
The ASA Member Track program is comprised of a network of short
tracks around the United States, as well as a variety of regional
and national touring series. For more information, call (386)
258-2221 or send an e-mail to
info@asa-racing.com. For news and

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 21, 2008) – The youth movement is alive and
well in racing, and nowhere as evident as at ASA Member Track Franklin
County Speedway. Located in Callaway, Va., the track’s Kids Club is
cultivating both race fans and future drivers.
Available to all children 12 and under, the FCS Kids Club plans a number
of activities during each of the regular Saturday night events.
“We are putting a lot of effort into making Franklin County Speedway a
kid-friendly racetrack,” said Richard Gluth, promoter of the 3/8-mile
facility. “Typically, on most of our race nights we can between 60 and
80 kids in the grandstands and participating in their special
activities.”
One of the most unique ideas that FCS has implemented for kids is to
have them paint a Ucar before the races with washable, watercolor
paints. Besides getting “hands on” time with a racecar, this gives the
kids a reason to watch the races, and a car to automatically cheer for.
If “their” car wins the race, all the kids are invited into the winners
circle to celebrate.
The Kids Club train rides are not only a popular attraction at the
racetrack, it helps to extend FCS into the community. The cars on the
train are sponsored by local businesses and are painted in the colors of
well-known stock cars.
“The Kids Club train rides have done well to help extend awareness of
the track out into the community. We will often bring it out to events
in the area and it is always a big hit. Of course, the local businesses
that sponsor the train cars get extra visibility, but more than that it
is always rewarding to see the big smiles on the kids as they ride the
train,” Gluth explained.
Other kid-oriented events include bicycle races around the racetrack,
visits by characters such as Shrek, and even a carnival to be setup
around the Fourth of July.
Don’t think that kids dominate the racetrack though, as the racing on
the 22-degree banking is fast and furious. When the 2008 schedule begins
in April, there will be five regular divisions competing for bragging
rights: Late Model Stock, Mod 4, Street Stock, Super Mini Cup and Ucar.
Special events during the year will be a visit by the ASA Southern
Modifieds on July 12, and a pair of races on May 17 and September 13
with the new Super Cup Stock Car Series.
Admission to FCS, which has been in continual operation since 1967, is a
reasonable $10 for adults, $5 for kids six to 12, and free for the
youngest in the crowd. Discounts are available for advance season
tickets. The 2008 schedule, along with class rules, photos and other
information can be found online at
www.FranklinCoSpeedway.com.
Attendance continues to grow, and Gluth has a number of ideas to bring
additional fans into the track. Several times during the year, on Friday
facility will host alternate events such as motorcycle rallies, street
rod shows or music and entertainment acts. Tickets for these Friday
night events will be honored at the gate for admission to the races the
following evening.
Another promotional idea is the $30 car load; for one price, fans can
stuff as many people into the car and each will be able to see some of
the most exciting racing in the region.
FCS is new to the ASA Member Track program in 2008, joining as a Level 1
member. Gluth cited a number of positives to joining the ASA family, but
the insurance and lower driver age requirements were two that he became
excited to discuss.
“The insurance program that ASA offers really caught my eye. It is
better than anything else in the industry and it is very important to
keep the racers protected,” he said. “The other thing is the lower age
requirements for a driver It is such a big drawing card for our
racetrack to get kids involved and we want to offer them as many ways as
possible to keep them interested and active in short track racing.”
ASA members in good standing are be eligible for a $500,000 Excess
Medical Benefit as well as a $20,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment
Benefit. Coverage for the member begins while traveling to a location
promoting an ASA-sanctioned event and continues until arrival home
again. The American Speed Association is the only sanctioning body to
offer insurance coverage which extends beyond the boundary of the
racetrack itself (see complete details on
www.asaracing.com) .
“I commend Richard and Franklin County Speedway for taking the
initiative to get the kids involved,” said Dennis Huth, president of
Racing Speed Associates which owns the American Speed Association. “A
lot of the time kids get dragged to the races by an enthusiastic parent
who wants to share their love for the sport, but often kids get bored if
all they can do is sit and watch the cars, especially the younger kids.
To have a lot of activities to do before and during the race is critical
to keeping the interest in racing alive in kids today, as they will
evolve into the fans and drivers of the future.”
